چکیده

Modern management of congenital cataracts which interfere with vision consists of early removal of the cataract and correction of the refractive error by contact lenses or glasses (Parks and Hiles, I967; Von Noorden, Ryan, and Maumenee, I970). Skiascopic postoperative refraction of aphakic infants cannot always be performed satisfactorily because the opening is sometimes small and irregular and no reflex can be seen. We, therefore, suggest that refractive error may be determined by calculation from ultrasonographic measurements.

Diagnosis of pupillary block glaucoma after removal of congenital cataracts with intraoperative ultrasound biomicroscopy: a case report

BACKGROUND Aphakic glaucoma is a common complication after congenital cataract extraction, especially in those who have surgery during infancy. This case report describes a case of bilateral pupillary block glaucoma diagnosed with intraoperative ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) after removal of congenital cataract. CASE PRESENTATION We present a case report of a 9-month-old infant with bilatera...

Artisan iris-fixated toric phakic and aphakic intraocular lens implantation for the correction of astigmatic refractive error after radial keratotomy.

We report 2 patients who had radial keratotomy (RK) to correct myopia. The first patient developed a postoperative hyperopic shift and cataract. Nine years post RK, she had intracapsular cataract extraction and implantation of an Artisan aphakic intraocular lens (IOL). Twenty years post RK, hyperopia and astigmatism progressed to +7.0 -5.75 x 100 with a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20...

Intraoperative aberrometry-based aphakia refraction in patients with cataract: status and options.

AIM To explore the application of intraoperative wavefront aberrometry (IWA) for aphakia-based biometry using three existing formulae derived from autorefractive retinoscopy and introducing new improved formulae. METHODS In 74 patients undergoing cataract surgery, three repeated measurements of aphakic spherical equivalent (SE) were taken. All measurements were objectively graded for their qu...

Using Temperature of IR Sources for Assessing Photochemical and Aphakic Retinal Hazard

Introduction Blue light is a part of the spectrum with the highest energy content, which can reach the retina. The damage that it can cause to the retina is called photochemical or blue-light retinal injury. For the retinal injury assessment of the photochemical and aphakic retinal hazards in the wavelength range of 300-700 nm, use of effective spectral radiance limits (W.m-2.sr-1) seems to be ...

Limitations of Intraoperative Aphakic Refraction Technique for Intraocular Lens Power Calculation

Intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations are known to be difficult in eyes that have had corneal refractive surgery and several methods have been proposed to estimate IOL power. Among the methods not requiring preoperative data, the apahakic refraction technique has been successfully used to calculate IOL power in post-refractive cases and other conditions that cause unreliability in standard ...
